Dubai: A Dubai-based groom-to-be was left heartbroken and humiliated after his bride-to-be disappeared on their wedding day in Moga, India.
According to PTI and local reports, Deepak, a daily wage worker from Dubai, had returned to India a month ago for his wedding to Manpreet Kaur, whom he met on Instagram. Despite their three-year-long long-distance relationship, the two had never met in person.
The wedding was set for December 6 at the “Rose Garden Palace” in Moga, but when Deepak and his 150 wedding guests arrived, they found the venue did not exist. After contacting Manpreet, she initially promised that her family would escort them to the venue but later switched off her phone.
Deepak and the wedding party waited for hours with no communication before filing a police complaint against the bride. He revealed to police that Manpreet had claimed to be a lawyer with a “good job” in Ferozepur.
“I never met her in person but saw her photos on Instagram. Now, I doubt if they were real,” said Deepak, visibly upset.
“She gave us the venue name, but when we reached Moga, no one knew of it. She told us to wait, but after hours of waiting and several attempts to call her, her phone was switched off. We’ve been scammed. We want justice,” he was quoted as saying.
In his complaint, Deepak mentioned sending Manpreet Rs 50,000-60,000 for wedding expenses during their online relationship. He accused her of cheating him and demanded police action.
Prem Chand, Deepak’s father, added that they had never communicated directly with Manpreet’s parents. The wedding had originally been scheduled for December 2 but was postponed to December 6 due to her father’s alleged illness.
“We borrowed money for this wedding and brought 150 guests, only to face this situation,” said Prem Chand.
A police officer confirmed that a complaint had been filed and said they would trace the woman using her phone number and call records. “The groom and bride met online, and the wedding was planned over the phone,” the official said, adding that further investigation was underway.
