Manish Malhotra opens up about conceptualising Ambani wedding, hails Nita Ambani’s ‘visionary’ leadership: ‘Seats with pockets, staff’s outfits, cutlery and invites’

Manish Malhotra opened up about conceptualising Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding last year.

Designer Manish Malhotra said that Nita Ambani and her daughter, Isha, were at the forefront of conceptualising Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding last year, which he executed. He said that the multi-day event presented India and Indian fashion in an entirely new light to the world, and brought a certain ‘elevated credibility’ to Bollywood style. Manish said that every tiny detail was pondered-over, and revealed that several companies from around the world were involved in putting the festivities together. Anant and Radhika had a lavish wedding in Mumbai, but in the months leading up to it, they hosted several pre-wedding parties in India and abroad. These events were attended by the who’s who of Bollywood, business, politics, and other industries.

The invites were designed by Manish and his team. In an interview with BBC Asian Network, he was asked about the massive undertaking, and he said, “I would give full credit to Mrs Nita Ambani because she’s a visionary. She’s somebody who has kindness. For her, it’s important to highlight Indian handicrafts, handloom, and culture.” He said that he had worked with her briefly in the past, but Anant and Radhika’s wedding was on another level.

“The meticulousness that she works with… The teams were all divided… It was a journey and an experience that I’ll never forget, because it was also an experience that we enjoyed. I can also keep discussing flowers and interiors and clothes,” he said. Asked to what degree he was involved, Manish explained, “It was Mrs Ambani who led this. We worked with her, on her vision. We were involved with every aspect, when it came to the hotels in Jamnagar, from the uniforms to the cutlery to the digital invites. The family is very involved. There was Isha as well. But Mrs Ambani is deeply involved. I’ve never seen a mother who is so involved, and so concerned about every guest, and the experience that the guests will have.”

Citing an example of the attention to detail, Manish said, “The chairs at the wedding all had pockets in the back, with water bottles and a wet towel. God is in the details. There were singers who sing cultural songs, there were maestros. There’s a lot of respect given by her to arts and culture. It was the whole world coming together.” Manish said that the wedding hugely altered India’s image before the world, in addition to taking his brand to new heights. “A wedding like this can never happen again in our lifetimes,” he said.
