Over the past few months, gold prices in India have seen a sharp rise, crossing threshold after threshold. With 10 grams of 24-karat gold priced over Rs 1,70,000 in the country, concerns have been raised about the ability of consumers to buy the precious yellow metal. The impact of the staggering prices is even being felt at weddings now. A post doing the rounds on X revealed how couples may now be opting for weddings without gold.

Gold jewellery is an important part of weddings throughout the country and is seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. From bangles to mangalsutra, a bridal outfit is incomplete without gold jewellery. However, the price of the precious metal may soon make it difficult to incorporate into Indian wedding traditions.

Couple Ditches Gold For Wedding

A user posted on X that his friend had decided not to buy gold and keep things basic with only rings and a mangalsutra since the current price of gold would double their wedding budget. The couple decided to save the money they would have spent on gold for future purposes. “Choosing marriage without gold is a good idea and should become normal. It should be mutually promoted by everyone, without judgment or criticism. Otherwise, middle class families may end up bankrupt or burdened with debt or loans,” the post read.

How Did The Internet React To The Incident?

For many people, the spike in gold prices represents a big loss for the middle class. “Rising gold and silver prices are forcing the middle class to sell land and property just to fund marriages. A massive L for the middle class,” a user wrote.

Another commented that the spike would affect jewellers adversely as well. “The way Gold and Silver is going up, Jewellers will go bankrupt. Business is down 80-90% for them.”

An individual advised that society should move towards wedding ceremonies like Mantra Mangalya, which do not have costly rituals.

One person questioned, “Without gold, marriage can’t happen?”

Another wrote, “Gold prices are rising day by day. In India, marriages can’t be postponed. Traditions don’t adjust for inflation. When prices rise, the middle class doesn’t complain-they sacrifice.”

However, some were in support of restructuring wedding budgets to buy more of the yellow metal. “Gold is the only spend that one should do in a wedding, rest all spend are air. Spend at least 70% of the wedding budget on buying Gold Tradition of Gold in marriage is the reason why Indian women are sitting on more Gold than the US, Russia, Italy combined. Gold empowers women in real,” an account claimed.

Some supported the couple’s decision. “Good decision. But gold is actually an imp part of our weddings. Let’s not normalize marrying like losers. some can afford to buy, some pass on ancestral gold. I don’t encourage going into debt but it is an imp part of dulhan’s shringaar. Itna paisa bachana hai toh sharab kam karo,” a user claimed.

Another said, “This is what sane families should do.”

With the debate on the importance of gold growing day by day, the high prices of gold and their impact on weddings will likely be felt for a long time.
