The wedding bells are ringing for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab yet again, with Cabinet minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer (34) all set to tie the knot in Chandigarh on November 7. Hayer will be the third minister in the AAP government to get married.
A close confidant of Hayer — who holds the sports, water resources, environment and youth services portfolio in the state cabinet — told The Indian Express that the minister will get married to Dr Gurveen Kaur of Meerut on November 7 in Chandigarh, with a reception being held the next day. Before this, the minister will be going to Meerut on October 29 for his engagement ceremony.
All the functions around the wedding will be private with only friends and family expected to be in attendance.Gurveen Kaur, the source said, is a trained radiologist, while Meet Hayer is an engineer. Gurveen’s family hails from pre-Independence West Punjab and settled in Meerut after the partition. Her father, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, is an Indian Olympics Association office bearer and was the Chef De Mission for the Indian contingent during the Asian Games in China. Bajwa is also the president of the Wushu Association of India.
Meet Hayer is a two time MLA from Barnala and had won the seat in last year’s elections with a margin of over 38,000 votes.
Hayer will be the latest among a bunch of AAP leaders of Punjab to have gotten married, ever since the party swept to power in the state in 2022 with a massive mandate.
