It was recently reported that 35 lakh weddings are going to take place in the country in the next few weeks. Indian weddings are a festival of their own, and have their own set of unique rituals and traditions. In many weddings, a groom sits on a mare (female horse) while arriving with the baraat on the marriage venue. Now, the netizens on Quora have raised this question: why does a groom always sit on a mare and not a stallion (male horse)?
One user gave an answer to the question. They said, “Only a few animals are used for the ride such as elephants, horses and camels. Out of these three, the choice of mare is the right because it is easy to control. You like to ride what is easy to control.” Another user called Kanak wrote, “According to a belief, the mare is intelligent, clever and efficient. Only a healthy and qualified person can control it.” They stated further, “The groom’s arrival on the mare is a sign that the man who holds the reins of the mare can also handle the reins of his family and wife well.”
According to several reports there is no scientific reason behind it. A website called Mangal Parinay says that a mare is believed to be more childish and playful. So, when a groom rides a mare, it signifies that he is ready to take the command and responsibilities.
Another belief says that, during a marriage when the bride looks at her groom, she must see only one male in front of her, and that is the groom. This is cited as one of the many reasons a mare is used instead of a horse.
