Wedding descends into bloodbath as teens ‘beaten to death after row over bread’

Two teenagers were found dead and believed to be beaten to death after an argument over tandoori rotis at an Indian wedding descended into anarchy. The alleged victims, named as Ashish, 17, and Ravi, 18, were bludgeoned to death by a group of men after a minor scuffle at the wedding celebration, police said.

Police in Gauriganj, India, arrested five people on suspicion of murder, after the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning. At about 11.45pm local time (6.15pm UK time) on Saturday night, Ashish and Ravi were queuing for some tandoori rotis – a type of flatbread – at the wedding venue. But they got into a verbal argument with the groom’s cousin and some of his friends, police claimed.

The row escalated into threats of violence, with witnesses claiming the tension continued to grow.

The groom’s cousin felt disrespected and humiliated by the argument, according to the Times of India.

Ashish and Ravi later left the venue on motorbikes, before allegedly being followed by a group of men armed with iron rods and hockey sticks, police added.

At about 1am, the accused group of men caught up to the two teenagers, before launching an attack, the police report claimed. Their motorbikes were allegedly destroyed, and they were beaten with the weapons. They were later found bleeding on the side of the road.

The teens were rushed to hospital, but Ashish died from his injuries while being transferred. Ravi died shortly after arrival.

Ashish’s dad, Shiv Bahadur, said: “My son went to attend a wedding. He never came back. The victims were both students, full of life and promise. And all of this because of a few rotis?”

Another relative added: “How fragile have our tempers become?”

Meanwhile, police stormed a wedding reception in Cheshire last year after a mass brawl erupted.

The bride had asked one of her guests to leave after they drank too much champagne – but they refused to go quietly.

He jumped up from his chair next to the dance floor of the wedding venue, and swung a punch at a security guard, breaking his glasses. He was later hauled to the ground, and then escorted out of the building.

There, a further altercation erupted when the man’s dad punched the wedding venue owner’s nephew, who was trying to break up the fight. Eyewitnesses described the wedding fiasco as “absolute chaos”.
